As it was traditional for the election cantatas at Mühlhausen to be published, this is the music of the earliest publication of Bach's music. Actually, it was not common to publish the music or parts; the Mühlhausen authorities were extremely pleased with the work. It was only common to print the text. --BachFan 07:33, 12 July 2021 (CEST)

The problem with trying to figure out the Key and the Keys of the various movements is that there are too many different keys used in the written and published parts: The Trumpets, the Timpani, the Violins, the Viola, the Violon, the Voices, and the Organ are written in for D instruments (that is, D Trumpets, D-transposed Voices, Violon, Timpani, Violins, Viola, and Organ), while the recorders are written in A (with no change of Key signature [one flat]) and the other instruments (the Oboes and the Basson) in concert pitch (D with 2 sharps, no transposition). This is probably why the BGA score forgoes all these problems and uses C as the main pitch (and also why it is usually thus performed in that key). BachFan 16:42, 18 December 2015 (EST)

Commentary on the movements

  1. Tutti: Gott ist mein König. Bach here divides the ensemble into five parts to make a highly variegated and heterogeneous sound. The movement is highly festive. D major
  2. Air (Soprano, Tenor): Ich bin nun achtzig Jahr. The organ here provides some obbligato. F minor
  3. Chorus (Fuga): Dein Alter sei wie deine Jugend. A very early permutation fugue of Bach's. For chorus with only Organ accompaniment. B minor
  4. Arioso (Bass): Tag und Nacht ist dein. A da capo aria; however, the music sounds more like Schütz than later Bach. F major
  5. Air (Alto) : Durch mächtige Kraft. A brief solo with plentiful interjections from the trumpets. D major
  6. [Chorus]: Du wollest dem Feinde nicht geben. The bassoon has an interestingly independent line here. The ending of this movement in particular is notable. D minor
  7. Tutti: Das neue Regiment. A motet-like, festive final chorus. D major
