Hallo Carolus, after you renamed my upload someone else uploaded these two concerti again under "concerto for oboe": one of these should be deleted to clear up the composer page - could only a moderator do that? kalliwoda 08-01-2001 19:49 CET

I would recommend that you abstain from uploading any more since it's most likely protected in the USA. No need to remove what's there, but I'd wait until we see some clarification on either the work's actual status in the US or a definitive decision about making items of this nature freely available for download in the US before adding any more movements. "No date" means there is no date printed on the score (or originally printed on the score). Simrock and Belaieff nearly always had dates on their scores - somewhere. If you found it in Hofmeister, that's about as good as it gets. You can put the date in parens (1886), meaning that it's a confirmed date. If you're guesstimating on the basis of plate numbers - some publishers are much more reliable than others about keep their numbers in an order useful for dating - use the (ca.1886). Avoid using c.1886 as it confuses some folks into thinking it's still under copyright. Carolus 03:50, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Busoni edition of WTC1 on Bach work pages

Thanks for splitting up the Schirmer files to fit on these work pages: WTC1, Nos. 1-12 and WTC1, Nos. 13-24. (That's work I probably should have done. I'm still learning.) Also, I removed Petri's and Mugellini's names as editors on the Busoni Breitkopf German editions (uploaded by Innocente), since Larry Sitsky (pp. 177-179) states they did not participate in editing these particular volumes (See also Wikipedia article, which I confess to having written.) Copyright status could probably be changed to "V/V/V" reflect that information. (I'm assuming it was "C/V/C" because of Petri's name being attached to it.) --Robert.Allen 19:49, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

A question about the scans obtained from other websites of Aguado: There seem to be some which are actually published collections of other works, such as Menuets et Valses (Aguado, Dionisio) and Contredanses à 2/4, Op.11bis (Aguado, Dionisio). Homerdundas has been very helpful in pointing these things out. However, because they are in fact the same works as elsewhere, would it be appropriate to split the PDFs and upload the relevant portions to the work pages to which they belong? My inclination is to leave them for the time being. Do you happen to know which works they are originally from? It's not impossible that they first appeared in this collection, but they were more likely included form an earlier issue. If they can be correctly identified, it's good to set up new pages. Otherwise, wait until more things surface (which they seem to have a way of doing around here!). Carolus 20:12, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
Unfortunately, I don't, although I will try to research it a bit more. The two pieces are an Andante (3/4 time, A minor, page and a half) and its corresponding Valse (3/8, also A minor, half a page). It looks like it would fit right in in Op.12, in fact- the same kind of thing.
Actually, there's another clue that they may have appeared in this collection first: All the other pieces in that set have been identified by an unknown person as whatever set they belong to (in a somewhat illegible scrawl), but not these two. I just noticed that we have two categories for Sebastián Iradier Salaverri and Sebastián Yradier, who are the same person. Emil Kreuz

Hello Carolus, I have noticed a composer name misspelling: Category:Kreutz, Emil should be Kreuz, Emil. There is only 1 work on his page ( Viola Concerto, Op.20 (Kreutz, Emil) ) along with a list of compositions. Would you mind correcting this when you have an opportunity? Händel, 9 deutsche Arien

Hi Carolus, in the forums recently there was a request for the "9 deutsche Arien" of Händel. I found the Breitkopf Edition (Nr.5458) in my collection of sheet music. There is a copyright notice: "Copyright 1931/1959 by Breitkopf&Härtel". The Editor is Herman Roth, who died in 1938. So I think, the music is public domain, isn´t it? If this is true, I can scan and upload the music, but only in several weeks.Notenschreiber 08:42, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Go ahead and upload it. I suspect the copyright notice is a bogus one as Breitkopf originally issued many similar things without a notice - only adding the claim on a later printing. Gliere Bassoon Piece

I thought this piece was clearly PD in Canadian terms. It was a typeset and it said free on the page. What was the motive for deleting this?

Hi, Unfortunately, it's form one of the Russian pages, whose idea of copyright and public domain is strange to say the very least (You can download Philip Glass, Samuel Barber, and a host of very obviously Non-PD items from Tarakanov's site, for example). Also, it's an arrangement, not a simple re-typeset (which I might have been more inclined to let pass). Gliere's Op.39 was originally for violin and cello, so the bassoon and piano is certainly arranged by someone - probably not the composer. That, coupled with the fact that it was obviously a recent typeset done in Finale or Sibelius, made this far too questionable absent any attribution for the arranger, etc. Carolus 03:48, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

Thank you both, guys. It goes without saying that we (CPDL) certainly do not intend to compete with IMSLP, but just help users contributing to either sites depending on the type of material (score) available. This is essentially what happened in this case with Beethoven's "Hallelujah": I didn't make any new typeset (that would be normally published by me at CPDL), but I had a copy of an old score available, so I published it at IMSLP. The availability of similar user interfaces on both websites would facilitate user's interactions. Therefore, your support on this matter would be really appreciated. Má Vlast

I was just wondering what your view would be about splitting Má Vlast into its component parts? The main rationale being that they all have different composition, instrumentation, performance and publication histories, which would be easier to convey on individual pages. I think there's a strong argument that these are independent works in their own right, rather like the operas that make up Wagner's Ring. At least one of the Smetana cataloguers thought that way, and allocatede them independent numbers.

So what I'm suggesting is:

  1. Create 6 new work pages for the component parts
  2. Split Solc's piano arrangement and the 3 sets of orchestral parts (which themselve are a hotchpotch of different editions) into individual files, and move them to the new work pages
  3. Move the remaining music files (which are all for individual components) to the appropriate new work pages
  4. Keep the existing page for Má Vlast, with links to each of its component work pages near the top, while maybe retaining the Commercial Recordings and General Information sections below.

I'm guessing that there will be orchestral parts forthcoming shortly, and whether these come in one big chunk or six smaller ones could have a bearing on whether splitting the page is a good idea :-) What do you think? — P.davydov 07:39, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I agree that it's probably best to split this - sort of like Wagner's Ring. There are many more parts coming, and the number of arrangements for Vltava alone that could end up here could make the page ridiculous. Leclair Violin Sonata

Hello Carolus: I have noticed that there are 2 different pages for the same Leclair sonata. The work in question is Sonata in D major "Tombeau" for violin and continuo, Op.9 No.3 -- there are 12 sonatas in this opus (see Wikipedia). The individual pages are: Violin Sonata No.3 (Leclair, Jean-Marie) and Andante alto et piano (Leclair, Jean-Marie) (viola and piano transcription for Movement I: Un poco andante). They're urtext except for continuo realizations, prefaces, and critical notes. Everything except No.3 is free in the USA (prefaces and all). Since No.3 was published for the first time in 1961, that will have to wait until 2012 as you mentioned. The prefaces, and continuo realizations should probably be left out as a precaution. It is possible they are meant to be included under the provisions of the urtext sections of the EU laws, but I don't know that for sure. I think it could be argued in Canada that they are protected for Schoenbaum's life plus 50 years.

Regarding Communication

Sorry for not replying re: the performance licensing issue. I currently do not have the ability to send e-mails, though I can read them. I also currently do not have long distance (as in, non-617) phone access, so I cannot call you either (this will, however, be fixed very soon). But do feel free to call, e-mail or write on my talk page. The move to Harvard was a bit of a mess notwithstanding the proximity, and I'm currently trying to back-paddle stuff I have queued to do.

I'm getting ready to go on vacation, so I recommend that you post a request for help at the forum. You should be able to export to PDF directly from Finale. If you're using Notepad, there might be more steps involved. Carolus 05:28, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

I don't think it matters. If you use a PDF printer (a good free example is here), after installation, you can select it in the print dialog to print to as if it were a normal printer, and instead of actually printing, it will come up with a window asking where you want to save the PDF file. Vacation

I will be departing on vacation on Wednesday, September 9 and will not return until after October 1. I'm sure our fine copyright review team will be more than able to keep up with things while I'm away, There is no e-mail available at the place I'm staying so there's little point in e-mailing me, though I might make a trip to the nearest town an check things at the local public library if there's a rainy day and I'm sufficiently bored. Saint-Saëns re-engravings?

Carolus, I hope I catch you before you leave, but in any case it isn't a rush. I have with me here a suspected re-engraving of some Saint-Saëns sacred vocal works published in 2004 by Carus of Stuttgart. These pieces Grove cites as being published, however I've never laid eyes on the originals. This publication is a re-engraving but mentions no editor or anything aside from the date. For future reference, how should works like these be treated? Daphnis 23:28, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

Is there a claim of copyright on these? They shouldn't really be making such a claim if it is a mere re-engraving - despite the fact that publishers make such claims all the time. Unfortunately, if they are making a copyright claim on something they issued in 2004, the burden would fall upon us to prove there is no original material therein. This is the major reason for our standing house rule about recent typesets, even though we both know very well that 98% of such claims for the typesets would fail if they actually went to trial. If a copyright claim is present, I'd apply the same rule to the Carus scores (not allowed w/o permission) that I do to the folks who come here and dump recent typesets from WIMA, etc. sans permission. However, if there is no such claim present, we can consider uploading them to the library on a tentative basis with an appropriate explanation in the misc. comments field. Just to let you know, I added a short set of piano pieces (Six Waltzes) to the Hedien, Mark page. I am the composer of those pieces, and public domain or creative commons is fine.

Hi, The reason was merely to save space. "Classical Composers" causes a break into 2 lines with a lot of web browsers. We should probably change the software to allow for longer contributor names without breaking, but there are many other things to fix first.
