This original version was first performed on the Feast of Visitation, 1723 at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig under the composer's direction (and repeated on Christmas Day, 1723, with 4 insertions). The work was subsequently revised as the Magnificat in D major, BWV 243 (1732/1735) and performed in its revised version in 1733.
