No plus sign (+) in titles/filenames.
Feldmahler, I recently created a page in Satie called Sonneries de la rose croix where I had to omit the plus sign between 'rose' and 'croix' or else the page would allow it to be created. I forgot to remove the plus sign in the file I uploaded so now it can't find it. Can you fix this or tell me how to edit already uploaded file names? thanks. Daphnis 10:04, 19 June 2007 (EDT)
- I've deleted the duplicate page but not the file. This is a similar bug to the ampersand (&) issue. The only way to rename the image is to delete it and reupload it, but I'll refrain from deleting it because I'm planning on squashing the bug in a few months (hopefully! but definitely will do this at some point). --Feldmahler 16:18, 19 June 2007 (EDT)
- I'm still seeing two pages (one with a '+' and the other without). Can you just delete the existing file I uploaded? I'll re-upload without the '+' character and all should be well, yes? Daphnis 17:22, 19 June 2007 (EDT)
- Ok, I've removed the file... also because apparently the + sign breaks the download too (damn legacy issues... the + sign used to represent a space in the URL though not any more, but most servers still do it anyway). Though I don't see a duplicate page in the composer category... I thought maybe it was a caching issues so I just cleared the cache of that category, and it should work right now. Go ahead and upload the file again with a different name :) --Feldmahler 18:50, 19 June 2007 (EDT)
- Done. All should be well now, except the minor thing of the '+' not being in the work title page. It obviously can't be in the file name, but was there also a problem with it being in the record/page? Daphnis 19:05, 19 June 2007 (EDT)
- Well... it's still the '+' bug, which I hope will be fixed soon, though fixing is it really a pain and involves changing many other things (along with some links on the wiki itself), including some site downtime. This is why I've put it on the to-do list when I do a major maintenance of the site itself. --Feldmahler 19:08, 19 June 2007 (EDT)
- No prob. At least the file's there and easily found :) thanks. Daphnis 19:11, 19 June 2007 (EDT)
I don't know who tried to translate the navigation menu on the left (the general one), but it is incomplete nevertheless. Anyway here's the links in the format of
Greek name (english name) - link to the page
- πλοήγηση (navigation)
- αναζήτηση παρτιτούρων (browse scores)
- συμμετέχετε (participate)
- άλλα (other)
In the "tools" section ("εργαλεία" in Greek), the last link ("Permanent link") should be translated to "Μόνιμος Σύνδεσμος". Also, when editing a page, the second link next to "Show Changes" (i.e. "Help Editing") should link to Βοήθεια:Επεξεργασία in the Greek translation. Moreover, in the text right above these buttons/links (and below the editing box), the link that links to "IMSLP:Copyrights" should lead to Δημόσιος Τομέας (the Greek page for "Public Domain"), and the link on the bottom of every page which says "General Disclaimer" (the right-most one) should lead to IMSLP:Αποποίηση Ευθυνών. Lastly, the middle link of these three should link to Κύρια Σελίδα, instead of linking to the English homepage. These are for now. If I remember/find any other links that haven't been translated, I'll let you know.
Concerning the rest of the translation, it's going great. I have about 10 pages left to translate (including Publishers' pages), and then I'll fix the final form of the Greek sitemap. If I finish it before the English sitemap, I could make the English one too, assuming Peter hasn't started working on it yet.
Take care! ~ jujimufu 12:45, 21 June 2007 (EDT)
- Thanks for the translations! I'll incorporate them over the next few days. Btw, if any admins are reading this, feel free to add them without waiting for me. :) --Feldmahler 15:41, 21 June 2007 (EDT)
- Thanks for the translations? It's the least I can do for this community :D Thank you for starting this community :) ~ jujimufu 08:23, 22 June 2007 (EDT)
- (new) - I am not starting a new subject since this question is also about translations
Also, I've been wondering how to translate pages such as IMSLP:Special:RateFile/MainText and IMSLP:Special:AddComposer/MainText. Should I just use IFLANG? (and btw, should I be using the %!IFLANG!%
thing or the {{#iflang:
one? Both work the same, as far as I can see, but I am just used to the %! one. Whatever, just tell me which one to use and I'll use it anyway =P Cheers! ~ jujimufu 14:10, 22 June 2007 (EDT)
- EDIT: nevermind, found it :P Thanks anyway ~ jujimufu 14:16, 22 June 2007 (EDT)
Merge an entire page with all contents
Feldmahler, how does one merge one page and all its contents and sub-sections with an existing page? As an example, this page really needs to be merged with this one but I'd hate to add a new entry and go back and copy everything from one location to another. Is there an easier way? Daphnis 15:32, 21 June 2007 (EDT)
- Well, after they are submitted you can basically edit them however you want without having to go through the add file page. In this case you can just copy the entry over and add the information at the same time. However, only one description section is allowed per page, so all the information on the page of the transcription will have to be moved into the file entry (even if it crowds the entry a bit). --Feldmahler 15:41, 21 June 2007 (EDT)
- I just copied everything over in one fell swoop. Hopefully that should be just as good. Daphnis 16:18, 21 June 2007 (EDT)
- It is fine :) --Feldmahler 16:59, 21 June 2007 (EDT)
Transcriptions and arrangements
Hi Feldmahler, I've seen that the workpage of Albeniz's Tango by Godowsky has been deleted (and meanwhile created again). So just a few thoughts to transcription/arrangements: Godowsky belongs like Busoni, Grünfeld, Schütt, Tausig, etc...and of course Liszt to those composers whose transcriptions are not simple remodelling but independent concert arrangements with often significant changes, extensions and variations, also in harmony. They make up a considerable part of their compositions and these composers are famous especially due to these transcriptions.
Of course, it's complete different with for example the arrangement of the Schumann symphonies by Kirchner or Ravel's orchestration of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, they belong clearly to the work page of the original work. So I think one should distinguish between these arrangements (usually for other instruments/orchestration/piano 4-hands, piano 2-hands, etc.) and those often free transcriptions (for concert purposes) mentioned above which should have at least a workpage in the transcriber's category. What do you think? In the submission guide is a paragraph on 'transcription, arrangement and reorchestration', which issues are exactly meant/included there? Hobbypianist 12:58, 22 June 2007 (EDT)
- That section is more targeted to pure transcription/arrangements (i.e. those that try to keep as close to the original work as possible). I don't really consider the other type (i.e. with significant variations) "arrangement" per se... I'd be rather inclined to call it an original work. However, I think the good thing to do in this case is to put the file on both pages (original composer and arrangement composer). In fact, this would be a nice thing to do for most transcriptions, though not many submitters actually do this... Actually, I'll put this on my to-do list, and maybe change the add work/file page to specifically accommodate transcriptions. :) --Feldmahler 11:54, 24 June 2007 (EDT)
Hallo Feldmahler :)
In normal cases i think its a problem with including transcriptions in the workpage of the orginal compositions.
I think transcriptions/arrangments should be seperated from the rest like this
A
B
.
.etc..
X Transcriptions arrangments of / composer/ by others (One workpage purely for that)
Have this in the bottom of the list using the X .
Also will seperat them clearly from the composers own transcriptions.
THAT IS IMPORTENT.
Nice things with it :)
1. It will be on the same page (as it should be)
2. It will be seperated form the composers own works (placed in the bottom of the list)
3. It will not take away focus on the composer.
4.Submitters like me will feel more well with it.)
Will there be a better solution :) ???
10:55, 24 June 2007 (EDT)
Abra
- I'm not sure which list you mean? The composer category list? Or the work page itself? The latter is already done in some cases; the former is rather hard to do without a complete redesigning of the category system... unless people use the same name format for transcription work page names. The solution may be a custom setting especially for transcriptions (as I answered Hobbypianist above). --Feldmahler 11:54, 24 June 2007 (EDT)
Spanish text on Babel 'es'
Hi there boss, the text included in the babel box corresponding to native spanish sounds REALLY weird and ackward.
This text "Este usuario es un hablante nativo de Español." should be changed to "Este usuario habla Español como lengua nativa." the other thext "Este usuario habla Español." it's perfect. Take care/ nachoBA
- If you think that is better, go ahead and change it :) --Feldmahler 16:26, 26 June 2007 (EDT)
Haha I'm 100% sure, but I'm having some problems finding where to change the template. How can I do this? thanks
- Here it is :) --Feldmahler 19:06, 26 June 2007 (EDT)
Done! cheers
WILLIAM BAINES
How do I move WILLIAM BAINES to William Baines? Physicist 13:40, 27 June 2007 (EDT)
- You will have to move the composer category (probably by just recreating it), and then manually move each page; the page should automatically go under the new category after you move it.
Oh... while we're chatting, someone needs to delete the opera transcriptions on the Wagner page which have now been moved to their corresponding opera pages. These are the only pages which do not have WWVs. Physicist 13:44, 27 June 2007 (EDT)
- Done :)
And another thing... Is there a way to create colored bullets? I'd like to use them to label the difficulty of études on my (soon to be begun) études page. Physicist 14:50, 27 June 2007 (EDT)
- You probably should ask Leonard; he's in charge of site design related stuff, and knows HTML and the wiki system well. I know about as much HTML as a monkey haha. --Feldmahler 16:37, 27 June 2007 (EDT)
Redirect
Hi, I tried to create a redirect page so that when someone clicked on Sonata Reminiscenza, Op.38, No.1 (Medtner, Nikolai Karlovich) it would take them to the larger opus page, Forgotten Melodies I, Op.38 (Medtner, Nikolai Karlovich) (Just to be helpful). However, when I deleted the page text and replaced it with #REDIRECT [[Forgotten Melodies I, Op.38 (Medtner, Nikolai Karlovich)]] it disappeared off the composer page. How do I get it to work? Thanks, Goldberg988 15:57, 27 June 2007 (EDT)
- You can simply add the Template:LangRedirect template to the redirect page, and it should work :) That said, it is generally used for (commonly used) different language translations of the same piece (the only page that uses it currently is Vivaldi's Four Seasons), and should be used as sparingly as possible, to avoid composer page crowding... --Feldmahler 16:37, 27 June 2007 (EDT)
Haydn piano sonata in Ravel's page
Feld...I found this page in Ravel's works. How can we relocate this? Daphnis 17:06, 30 June 2007 (EDT)
- I have no idea what happened there, but it is fixed now... please report further incidences of this to me; I want to find out what exactly happened. --Feldmahler 19:25, 30 June 2007 (EDT)
Assigned PD-Templates
Hi Feldmahler, it seems that only the year of death is used to determine the Template for a composer/works. Szymanowski for instance died on March 29, 70 years ago, so I think his works are in PD even in the EU. Is it possible to include also the month and day (provided that it's available)? Will the system then remove automatically the templates from a category and all the workpages when the copyright term is over or has this to be done manually? Hobbypianist 17:48, 30 June 2007 (EDT)
- Actually, in all the jurisdictions I've seen so far (I know for sure that this is the case in Canada and the US), they all count the copyright term from the end of the year of birth. So it doesn't matter whether you are born on Jan. 1st or Dec. 31st; the copyright will expire on the same day (i.e. Jan. 1st 71 years later). So the tagger is actually correct :)
- And yes, the auto-taggers (both for the composer and work pages) will automatically remove the templates, unless they are manually tagged, in which case they need to be manually removed. --Feldmahler 19:25, 30 June 2007 (EDT)
- You meant year of death, didn't you? If the term is always counted from the end of the year resp. 1st January then it's in fact somewhat variable between 70 and 71 years...hmm, that's interesting. Thanks for the info. Hobbypianist 12:54, 2 July 2007 (EDT)
- Oops... yes I meant the year of death. Don't know how that happened. :) --Feldmahler 19:32, 2 July 2007 (EDT)
Dohnanyi on US Server
Hi Feldmahler, I noticed that all of the Dohnanyi scores on the U.S. server give an error message when you click to download them. Do you know what might be the problem that is causing this?--Mcroskell 02:51, 5 July 2007 (EDT)
- Ahh... that was because of an encoding mismatch. I've removed the accents on the two letters, so it should work now :) --Feldmahler 03:13, 5 July 2007 (EDT)
Translation of "contents"
Heya there!
I'm just leaving this note to tell you translate the MediaWiki:Toc template, using the iflang construct. The Greek translation of the word "Contents" is "Περιεχόμενα", but I can't edit the page myself (I only get the "view source" option or something like that). Here's the code, so all you have to do is copy-paste it in the page:
{{ #iflang:
|en = Contents
|el = Περιεχόμενα
}}
- Actually, its already translated here (as part of the software package): Mediawiki:Toc/el. And the translations also seems to be working fine on the category pages... where do you see the untranslated word "contents"?
- Well, pretty much everywhere... even on this discussion page (it says "Contents" not "Περιεχόμενα", and when I clicked on the link you gave me above, it transfered me to a page I can only view, and I didn't see the word "Περιεχόμενα" in it...
Also, I would like to ask about what's going on with the translations of the navigation menu (the main left one). I mean, is it being worked at, or is everyone too busy at the moment that nobody is available to fix it? Concerning the status of the rest of the Greek translations, it's going amazingly great. I've translated (using IFLANG) the MainTexts for the AddWork/File/Composer special pages, I've translated (using IFLANG again) all except for 3 publishers' pages, and all I have left (apart from translating the 3 publishers' pages) is translate one more page and I'm done :) BTW, I've translated the texts for the "Add Work/Composer/File" pages, but I haven't seen them in action (so I guess something needs to be done from your part in order for them to work, unlike the main texts of these pages), so here are the links with the translations to embed them: Add File Special Page Translations, Add Work Special Page Translations and Add Composer Special Page Translations (the Greek translation's one the bottom). I believe I will have finished the remaining pages by the end of the week the latest, and with your help, the Greek version of the site will be the first completely complete translation of IMSLP. Thing is, it's pity that Greek visitors of IMSLP are but a minority in comparison to visitors from other countries. :P
- Ahh... the navigation menu is because I was too busy at first; should be done now :) About the special pages, if it is ok with you I'd like to wait until August so that I can put it in when I upgrade everything. This especially goes for the add work special page which as it is cannot be translated (the code wasn't designed with translations in mind), so I have to rewrite sections of it (note that even the Spanish translation is not up because of this). The other two are better, but I'd rather do coding all at once rather than all over the place, especially since August is fast approaching, and I still have some work left to do for my masters application (like I said on my user page) :) --Feldmahler 17:51, 8 July 2007 (EDT)
- Mhm, it's fine now, thanks :) And yeah, sure, it can wait, As I told you, there are very few people from Greece who visit this site (yet), so it doesn't mind that much. And yeah, don't get your mind too much off your conservatory work :P
Oh, and one last thing: I noticed that Mediawiki does not inform users for moving pages which they watch. Is this a general problem in Mediawiki, or is it just an option that was left unchecked? Just asking, because Leonard moved some Greek pages, and he acted well, but the problem is that I didn't get informed about the moves, and thus I wouldn't have fixed the OtherLang pages and the navigation menus for these pages if I hadn't accidentally noticed the changes.
- I think it may be because of what Mediawiki does when moving pages. Basically (I think), Mediawiki changes the page name, and creates a redirect page with the original name. Since the watchlist is based on page id numbers and not page names, you do not get notified since the page with that page id did not actually change (page ids survive moves and even deletes). You can check if this still happens in the latest Mediawiki (maybe using Wikipedia?), and if it does you can file a bug report on mediawiki.org if you want :)
- Ok, thanks :) I'll check it out :D And it does make sense the way you described it. Is it possible that you could make a script that whenever a page is renamed (i.e. moved) it notifies the user?
Anyway, thanks again for everything, c ya later :)
~ jujimufu 08:36, 8 July 2007 (EDT)
P.S. Would you like it if I linked from work pages to recordings of the piece, either digital (for typesetted scores) or real recordings which belong to the public domain (by the consent of the player and the composer - but anyway, the recordings will be hosted in other sites so it won't be a legal problem for IMSLP). In particular I am talking about pianosociety.com. The site also has scores of the pieces, but I don't think they have any scores that IMSLP doesn't have. I think it would be nice in terms of education to have a recording of the pieces linked to the piece. That site currently has only piano pieces, but I am sure we can find recordings of other pieces as well.
- You know, I'm very much for linking to recordings; in fact, this may be something I'll include in the work page template. I'd only go for real recordings; digital ones (i.e. synthesized) are generally of rather questionable quality. But yes, this would be a good idea :) It'd be even better if there could be a partnership between IMSLP and the particular recording site, so we have a two-way exchange :) For now maybe you can wait until I set up the "Recording" field in the work page template, so that you don't have to redo the linking? Maybe in the meanwhile you can contact the site to see if they'd like some sort of partnership? :) --Feldmahler 17:51, 8 July 2007 (EDT)
- I'll definitely contact the site. They have tons of recordings, which the respective players have already given permission for public availability, so partnership between the two sites would be relatively easy. Plus, they could link to the scores at IMSLP, instead of hosting the scores on their site, so visitors could get more information on each score, instead of just getting the notes. Cheers! ~ jujimufu 04:26, 11 July 2007 (EDT)
Actually, I just checked the Greek translation of the navigation menu, and I noticed that, although the links are translated into Greek, not all the links link to the respective Greek pages. For example, the links under the category "other" (άλλα), i.e. Sitemap (Χάρτης Ιστοσελίδας) and Site Support (Υποστήριξη Ιστοσελίδας), link to the English pages instead of the Greek ones. Also, "Community portal" (Ο ιστοχώρος της κοινότητας, in Greek) would be better if translated into "Πύλη συνεισφερόντων", like the page to which it links. That's all for now, I'll go finish the remaining Greek translations because I'll be gone for the weekender (weekend+friday :P). Take care! ~ jujimufu 04:45, 11 July 2007 (EDT)
- This will have to be implemented software-wise, so I'll wait until August when I rewrite everything :) --Feldmahler 10:39, 12 July 2007 (EDT)
Buxtehude List of Compositions
Hi there, I've been trying to find how to create a page for Buxtehude's List of Compositions. I think it has to be created by some of the administrators, isn't it? Could you please create it for me so I can put the data?
- Actually, anyone can create a new page (see here). I've already set up the work list link on the Buxtehude category page, so all you have to do is click on the red link and edit the page :)
Also I would like to split up the files that actually are in the composer page. I do not mean to delete them, but also to have the possibility of fast finding one particular work (especially this will be usefull when the 'list of compositions' page is working) What do you think?
Thanks in advance. NachoBA
- It may be a good idea to be careful when splitting files. I say this because the most ideal file size on IMSLP is between 2MB and 6MB; having too many small files makes downloading them troublesome, while having too many large files wastes bandwidth and makes downloading slow. Hence I won't say "don't split it", but just that it may be good to exercise caution when doing so, especially in the case of many small pieces (ex. chorale preludes). On the other hand I don't know much about Buxtehude, so there may be natural split(s) somewhere.
- However, I do think the Buxtehude category is in dire need of a cleanup... and I think the Bach category may serve as a good guide :) Basically, BuxWV numbers should be in every title, and the work pages should possibly be split (I'll leave that up to you). You can link to the same work page multiple times on the work list if necessary (this has been done for many other work lists).
- Feel free to ask if you have any more questions about this :) --Feldmahler 10:39, 12 July 2007 (EDT)
- Sounds good. The page has been created and Wikipedia's legacy links removed. I've also added a picture of Buxtehude's organ. How do I rename a category..let's say I want to rename "Preludes for Organ" to "Choral Preludes for Organ, BuxWV xxx - Bux WV xxx" how do I do that? sorry for being a pain.
Thanks in advance. nachoBA
- You can simply use the "move" tab on the top of the page :) --Feldmahler 16:48, 12 July 2007 (EDT)
