Excerpts from the opening of the first movement and a section believed to be part of the slow movement were published in short score in A Dictionary of Music and Musicians, Vol.2 (1880). The manuscript full score was in the possession of Mendelssohn’s oldest daughter. This work is an arrangement of the Symphony in C major (sketches) N 19 which Grove 1980 reports as existing as an autograph manuscript.

Todd refers to this symphony in Mendelssohn: A Life in Music, pages 492–493 – the C major fragment exists in manuscript (and reduced in Grove II as above) and is mentioned in letters from February to April 1845. The Mendelssohn Werkverzeichnis lists letters as early as 1842 that mention the symphony.

It seems that the original of the symphony (however orchestrated it is (?)) is in the Bodleian Library, Oxford.
