Really A minor rather than A major, it seems, but generally given as A major. (Perhaps there is some composer because the composer wrote "in A" which does not necessarily mean "A major".) Given as A minor here "by observation".

The identities of the five dedicatees seem to be something of a mystery. Two have been identified as the sons of Alan Gray (Stanford's successor), killed in the last months of WWI, but instead of attempting to enlighten one as to the identities of the first three, most on writing of the trio have prevaricated and described the trio as dedicated to only those two people: which it is not.
