History

Founded in 1826 by Julius Ferdinand Georg Schuberth (1804-1875) in Hamburg. Branch offices were opened in Leipzig (1832) and New York (1850). In the 1830s the imprint Schuberth & Niemeyer was used, until G.W. Niemeyer left to set up his own business in 1839. Julius left the Hamburg office in charge of his brother Friedrich (Fritz) - Friedrich Wilhelm August Schuberth (1818-1890) in 1854, devoting his energies to the activities of the Leipzig and New York branches. J. Schuberth acquired Felix Siegel of Leipzig in 1899.

The firm continued to operate under the control of his brother and widow until, long after Julius' death in 1875, it was sold to C.F.W. Siegel (1891). The New York branch was re-named Edward Schuberth & Co. sometime around 1875 and started issuing its own series of publications independently, with plate numbers preceded by "E. S. & Co.". Some publishing activity was continued after this date by Fritz Schuberth Jr. (Karl Hermann Schuberth 1860-1942?) in Hamburg (founded in 1888 according to Musikverlagswiki).
