Based on the manuscript of Johann Peter Kellner, Anna Magdalena Bach and the arrangement for lute solo by J.S. Bach himself (BWV 995). Normal notation score is not an arrangement for normal-tuned cello. It is simply written in real notes. See also Editor's Notes

Misc. Notes

Here the four known manuscript sources have been typeset and laid out in score form so that they can be easily compared with each other. The pitches are notated at their true pich (not with scordatura). We have tried to reproduce as closely as possible the ambiguities in the slur placements and shapes of the original manuscripts.

Misc. Notes

Anna Magdalene Bach's manuscript of this composition is full of amateurish errors and unplayable on the cello as written. Apparently this composition was not originally written for the cello. This Arrangement attempts to rectify those problems and uses phrasings from JS Bach's version of the Lute Suite based on the same original composition to reconstruct something more celloistic and closer to some original which is unavailable to us.

The title page reference to Robert Schumann is due to the fact that Schumann's arrangement used Dotzauer's edition as its source. Stade's revised arrangement incorporated features from the Dotzauer and Grützmacher editions, while the original version is mainly based on Norblin's edition from ca.1824.

Related Works
|
Musicologists have speculated that this work and the Suite in G minor, BWV 995 are both transcriptions of a composition for some other instrument such as the lautenwerk (lute-harpsichord) or the mandora, a type of bass lute.
