Two different forms of this chorale melody are in use: in the 1623 version, the four note "hallelujah" refrain is interposed after each eight note phrase, giving an ABABCDCDBBd structure. In the 1625 version, the order is changed to AABBCCDDBBd. Some of the musical phrases are borrowed from the Genevan Psalter tune for Psalms 36 and 68. |
