Does Slåtten mean folksong or folk-dance as well as (in Swedish) mowing?
Answer: In all Nordic languages, 'slå' is a verb meaning strike or hit; in this context equivalent to strike up or start playing. In Norwegian, present perfect 'slått' has been turned into a noun denoting a traditional fiddle tune. The ending -en is the definite article. -- The Norwegian fairytale figure Tyrihans or Askeladden is the lad who wins the princess because he knows the right answers to all the intricate questions she asks - some sort of an ancient Will You Be A Millionaire winner. -- Norwegian9
