(original German text not provided. This editor harbors a suspicion that Brooks wrote the text in English in the literary style of some trends in German 19th-century poetry, but as his own work, claiming a foreign origin for it to make it more acceptable to the Germania Society. This is a suspicion, however, based largely on the difficulty this editor is having finding the source of the text- others may have no difficulty at all and may flip to some random page of Eichendorff and voila, for ought I know.)
