Some sources state that this work is based on on Les mousquetaires de la reine by Fromental Halévy. Loewenberg's Annals of Opera and Grove state Fitzball's libretto is based on the same one used in Martha by Flotow, which is also mentioned in Mary-Schell Bacon's 1915 book Operas that Every Child should Know (p.106)
