Samuel Goodrich , 1836, "Peter Parley's Juvenile Tales", provides at least the title of the song (actually, not even that- "Boy and Bird" is not, exactly word for word, in the book, though many related items are that might have inspired this song.)
(Two editions of this book can be read at Google Books, including this one. Neither seems to contain the text of the song exactly, at least from a quick search... suggesting that that the song text might be Waud inspired by Goodrich's stories?... or of course it might be found in some other work by Goodrich.)
