Template talk:MssAu

The strict definition of holograph is, I think?!?!?!?, signed autograph (signed manuscript in the composer's own hand*) and often one looks for a date also, so a template for an unsigned undated autograph (definitely in the composer's own hand, but without signature) could be useful, or else an explanation that the holograph/autograph distinction is not being made (in that way) here (confusing?...) *Of course, I always thought "autograph" meant signed document, whether or not the rest of the document was published, etc., in the author's own hand, or anything else ...- that is to say: that "autograph" referred to the signature per se and of itself. To discover that the difference between "autograph" and "holograph" is the presence of a signature, that is to say an "autograph" in the latter case over and above the former... erm, well, language and contexts and language-games are weird. Yep!!!!!

Coming from a background in history holograph has always meant to me a document in the author's hand signed by the author. Eventually I read the wikipedia article on Holograph and discovered the rather perplexing fact that music appears to be the only field in which a holograph does not have to include the author's signature in his/her own hand. Likewise, an autograph is a document in the author's hand but lacks the author's signature...except in music in which apparently an autograph is document in a known hand. --Cypressdome 02:32, 12 December 2016 (CET)

  • Ah. Some... many... of these bits I too did not know, and some of them specifically I didn't know until just now, and should have found out before putting foot in mouth (tasty...) again recently. Hrm. Well, better later than never!! Eric 05:10, 25 February 2019 (CET)

Aaaagh

"inputting no variables will result in the template placing the work page in the category of "Composers' holographs from the 00s" and "Manuscripts from the 00s" which should be avoided."---yeah---except there are 104 pages that do that! I can't handle this at 10:45pm, I'll have to fix it sometime in the next few days. KGill talk email 04:44, 5 March 2017 (CET)

(To be clear: I mean fix the template, which should of course handle these cases better, not each of those pages. KGill talk email 04:45, 5 March 2017 (CET))
