Extra Information Upton (The standard symphonies: their history, their music, and their composers, 1889) gives 1875 for the date of composition of the 3rd symphony. Mentioned briefly (the canonic minuet) on page 180 of the composer's own A course of instruction on canon and fugue.). A Sondershausen-orchestra-held copy (printed, not manuscript, so probably the Kistner-published score and parts?) of the symphony is described at RISM here (D-SHm Mus.C60:1). Recording of all 4 symphonies recently (2015) has been released on cpo. A performance with Ernst von Schuch in March 1877 in Dresden took place, but not under Rietz (as the composer had hoped, asking permission, in a letter 23 September 1876, to dedicate to Rietz this symphony as he had his first Op.24.).
