- as there seems to be little of D♭ major about this quartet until the end of the finale, however, I am inserting the correct (going by any typical 'rules' I think I know) key of C♯ minor. The numbering of Toch's quartets presents even more of a problem- the first five or so are lost (this editor hopes not forever), but the composer-approved numbering starts with number 6 for the quartet in A opus 12 and goes from there to the quartet no.13 opus 74 (a very fine work I think- I own two recordings- but neither PD-US/CA/EU until 2015, so...)(further note: Violin I part has appasionato, Violin II, Viola, Cello have appassionato.) - Schissel
Intriguingly or just oddly, the 1958 recording of this work by the Westwood String Quartet (on Stereo Records S7016) is reported to take up only 21.5 minutes' space. It is available streaming on NML in some areas outside the US (but not inside), and the competing cpo recording (which lasts almost 40 minutes) is available more widely; perhaps someone could compare the two and determine just how much of that is tempo and how much, if any, is due to cuts... (one might be tempted to assume the latter but should not do so, especially when it is sometimes possible to hear both.) (According to Discogs.com, the timings of the movements of the 1958 recording are 6:11/4:30/6:10/4:36/8:51.)
