Instrumentation | 1, 2, 3 or 4 parts with continuo. "soprano" here refers to a soprano instrument. See above listing, and discussion below. |
Castello himself was a wind player, and according to Grove Music, "Castello's two collections of sonatas, comprising 29 works, are not as idiomatic to the violin as works by some of his contemporaries (for example G.B. Fontana, C.A. Marini and Uccellini), but the virtuoso instrumental writing, especially for the bassoon, is notable." This gives a clear indication as to the types of instruments that would be suitable for these sonatas.
Ranges of the "Violette" & "Viola" instruments:
Later in the 18th century the term "violetta" was used interchangeably with "viola", however earlier in the 16th & 17th centuries, it was used to describe various types of stringed instruments, both of the violin, and viol families. Here, the Trombon/Violetta parts fit within a bass/tenor range, in one example extending as low as C2, and as high as A4. This makes them unplayable on a regular viola. Bass viols, or other string basses may be considered.
The Violette in Sonatas decimaquinta & decimasesta (per stromenti d'arco) have a different range to those used to substitute trombones. The first part is playable on violin, and possibly viola (although the C string would not be required, and 3rd position would be necessary). The second fits well on the standard viola, using all four strings and remaining in first position.
The "viola", whether used both as a substitute for fagotto, or in the sonatas for stromenti d'arco, is a bass instrument, providing an independent and elaborated bass part. In other publications from this time period, parts fulfilling this function were labelled "violone".
