In the Bourdeney Codex (Paris BNF VMA 851), this madrigal is copied with the note "nel ritorno del Duca di Ferrara Alfonso Secondo di Francia",indicating the likelihood both the sonnet and the madrigal were written to celebrate the return of the Ferrara heir in 1554, who had gone to France without permission two years earlier to prove his worth as a soldier. The paired madrigals are unusual in that first is written with an alla semibreve time signature (sometimes associated with sadness), and the second with an alla breve (sometimes associated with happiness). The character of the first as well as the text of the octave of the sonnet reflect despair of the land's lord leaving, while the sestet and music of the second are brighter and joyful.
