History

Pierre (or Pieter) Mortier of Leiden (1661-1711), the son of a Huguenot emigrant from France, obtained the privilege of printing French maps in Holland in 1690. He also published musical scores, in competition with Estienne Roger of Amsterdam.

After Mortier's death his widow continued the business, and after her death in 1719 his son Cornelis (1699-1783), took over. In partnership with Johannes Covens I (1697-1774) Cornelis operated Covens en Mortier, the most important map publishing business of his time, which lasted for 140 years.
