History

Paul Günther Selbstverlag of Leipzig published works for the viola and viola d'amore in the 1930s. His scores were printed from manuscript rather than engraved.

The catalog consisted of two sections: historical and modern. The historical works were solo works and chamber music by Graupner, Ganspeckh, (Friedrich) Rust, F. Benda, Carl Stamitz, Anton Vranicky, Borghi, Pezold and others: for example Suite for 2 Violas d'amore in A major by Wilhelm Ganspeckh (18th century), Sonata for Pomposa, Op.37c, by Christian Joseph Lidarti, 3 Sonatas, Op.5, by Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1798), and Adagio e Tema con Variazioni for Viola and Orchestra, BI 133, by Alessandro Rolla (ca.1800).

As for the modern works, there were items such as the Sonata for Viola d'amore and Double Bass, Op.27, by Oskar Geier (1889-1952), the Viola d’amore Sonata, Op.16, by Botho Sigwart (1884-1915), and the Sonata for Viola d'amore and piano by Julius Röntgen (1913). Finally, there were several by a small group of Viola d'amore enthusiasts: the Czech Theodor Schulz (1875-1945, also known as Vlastimil Přímý) and the Dutch Cor Kint (1890-1944): Sarabande u. Tambourin, Kleine Suite im alten Stil, and Serenade.

Various editors contributed to the series: Cor Kint, Theodor Schulz, Fritz Müller, Max Weißgärber (1884-1951) and Paul Günther himself.
