Holle of North Germany was a major publisher of piano music in the mid 19th century.
In 1837 Auguste Holle, a widow, bought the firm Hartmann’sche Kunst- und Musikalienhandlung for her son Gottfried Friedrich Ludwig (Louis) Holle. Hartmann had been founded a few years earlier (1821) in Wolfenbuttel, a small town near Braunschweig in Lower Saxony, by C. H. Hartmann (1797-1840). Louis Holle built the firm into a thriving Music and Map publisher with its own printing works. There were many complete works for piano (Beethoven, Hummel, Weber etc), and classical works arranged for piano solo or duet in the catalog.
Holle was bought in 1872 by Daniel Grüneberg, of Grüneberg’s Buch- Kunst und Musikalienhandlung in Braunschweig, for his son in law Julius Zwissler (1848-1922). Zwissler had already founded his own publishing firm in nearby Braunschweig in 1872. In 1881 Zwissler became sole owner and changed the name to Julius Zwissler (L. Holle’s Nachfolger). However he was more interested in history book publishing than music, and sold the music side of the business to C.F.W. Siegel of Leipzig in 1894. He also disposed of the printing works.
The remainder of the history is given on the Möseler Verlag page.
