This small firm appears to have been founded in 1958 by American musicologist Howard Chandler Robbins Landon (1926-2009) for the purpose of completing his edition of all the Haydn symphonies, possibly in partnership with Bernhard Paumgartner (1887-1971) and the Vienna publisher Universal Edition, who seems to have been HMP's exclusive distributor. The firm seems to have been absorbed by Universal by the early 1980s. Landon was residing in Salzburg when the firm was founded.
