It is unclear whether only the double bass is ad lib., or whether all instruments other than piano are ad lib. All obbligato parts are cued in, so it could potentially be played by piano solo.
One WorldCat entry gives alternate setting of "Kl Vl 1 2 Va Vc Kb" but this gives 6 instruments in addition to the piano, and the original fl/cl gives 5 instruments in addition to the piano. However, the title page says "Au défaut de la Flûte et de la Clarinette on peut remplacer ces deux instruments par deux Violons, dont les parties se trouvent ci-joints." This translates to "If there is no flute and no clarinet, these two instruments can be replaced with two violins, of which the parts are included." So if all parts are played it will use 5 instruments plus piano regardless of whether the wind or string version is used.
