The imposing head office building in Warsaw, 1907
History
In 1857 Polish-born Gustav Gebethner (1831-1901) and Robert Wolff (1832-1910) started their Warsaw bookselling and music publishing company, which flourished in the peaceful and increasingly prosperous Eastern Europe of the second half of the 19th century. They specialized in contemporary Polish composers such as Moniuszko, in addition to the first Polish complete Chopin edition. There was a prodigious output, about 7000 works in all.
In the 1890s they opened a branch in Cracow, in the south of Poland. The reason for this was to take advantage of the better copyright protection in Austro-Hungary. Unlike the Russian Empire, in which Warsaw was located, Austro-Hungary, of which Galicia, stretching across the Northern Carpathian foothills from Cracow, (Krakau, now Krakow) in the west to Lvov (Lemberg, now Lviv in the Ukraine) in the East, was a province, had signed the Berne convention (1886) on intellectual rights.
Finally the company was nationalized after the second world war, becoming part of Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne.
