Hugo Ruf's edition is based on a non dated one published in Hamburg by Michael Christian Bock under the title : Sei Quartetti a Flauto traverso, Violino, Viola e Basso. Bach served for his dedicatee, first as chamber musician, then as leader of the orchestra (Konzertmeister). The original print describes him as Maestro de Concerti which limits the production of the quartets some time between 1759 and 1777.
