Alkan's Esquisses were composed over a long span of time. See W.A. Eddie, "Charles Valentin Alkan: His Life...", chapter 7. To quote Misha Donat (in the Hyperion Records notes above) - "One of the numbers in the third Book, Délire, was probably the first to come into existence: it exists in a previous version (in D major, rather than the E major of its final form) dated as early as October 1847." The set of 49 was gathered -as a set-, according to Eddie, in 1861 and published in that year, but the individual pieces have a much longer genesis.
