The basso part come from the Arcadelt madrigal of the same name, while the canto and tenore parts provide an elaborate, fast fantasia on top of it.
Grove Music describes Ruffo's 1564 collection of capricci as: "textless compositions apparently intended for instrumental performance, are studded with technical and notational difficulties, and are the earliest known instrumental pieces to be described as ‘capricci’."
