Sibley gives the dates of the author of the poetry, Harold Simpson, as 1909-1955, which seems just a touch unlikely given that the music was published in 1906. (Sibley also lists this as a single poem, Down in the Forest, but this is actually the 2nd of the 5-poem cycle Cycle of Life - see this article, or the title page of the score.) (Edit note: it has been explained to me that the 1909 was a "fl. 1909" that lost its fl. during transfer to a new system. That makes more sense...)
Score specifies that there are two versions, one for soprano or tenor, one for mezzo or contralto and baritone, in two different keys (E♭, C).
