Extra Information

The poem by Paul Gilson comprises 3 parts of which Jongen only set the first two, remarking on the labour involved. 1er Prix Grand Concours de Composition Musicale 1897 (Académie Royale). CeBeDem and Brussels Conservatoire Library index state this work is opus 14. I think this is an error, and arises from a misreading of the catalogue in Guchteneere’s thesis, in which Comala has two entries, CAT. 14a & CAT. 14b (full orchestral score, and reduction for 2 pianos) both of which state op.11. A hasty reading of the catalogue could easily have picked out the catalogue number in place of the opus number. Guchteneere’s thesis is dated 1972 and so would have been available when the manuscript was catalogued by CeBeDem on 22-3-1973 (label inside cover). The error was then propagated by Brussels Conservatoire when they took possession of the CeBeDem library.
