From Lusatia (eastern part of Prussia, now in western Poland). He was a cellist, composer and editor. Worked as a cellist in London 1877-1889 and Boston 1889-1909. During the 1890s he published his series of famous Langey tutors for many instruments. Finally from 1909 he worked in New York as an editor for Schirmer.
