The- apparently??- WW1-specific references in the poem make one really wonder whether the poet is the early 19th-century James Church Alvord (1808-1839) or just someone else of the same name (or using the pseudonym!)
Also in 1919, Ditson published "An American ace : scena for tenor solo and chorus of men's voices, op. 82", presumably(???) a reorchestration of this song.
