The Basso part in this edition has (unrealized) figured bass. The flute and oboe parts both state "or violin", and the viola part is listed as Taille on the cover (implying other 'tenor' instruments such as the alto oboe could have played it).

Although the works were composed in London, JC Bach's visit to the electoral court at Mannheim in 1772 explains the dedication. S.Sadie's edition is based on the original London edition but variants in other contemporary versions are said to have been considered. The works can be performed as quintets without keyboard support.
