The viola sonatas date from 1985 and '86 when I was playing viola myself. There isn't a formidable repertoire as there is for violin and cello, so I decided to add a droplet or two to correct that.
I particularly recall that I wanted these almost tonal works to grow out of the kind of contrapuntal techniques that characterize J.S. Bach's music, even though the material itself is quite different, so you will find that both piano and viola parts stand quite independently and share in the thematic material and its development. This is particularly the case in the third movement, where canons abound between viola and piano, at the same time introducing a sort of huffing-and-puffing quality which could only have manifested in our time.
