A friend of mine (Meir Winston) is a talented songwriter. He wrote a piece that has a very interesting opening to my ear. The opening 5 note motive of this piece is based on the opening five notes of his theme. All of the movements derive from that opening 5 note motive, though the other four movements are more subliminally related than direct statements. Still I call it "Variations Suite" as there is a germinal relationship to that opening in all of the movements, though the listener may not at all realize it. Meir gave me his approval to use the theme so here it is. In some ways this piece is a Homage to Grieg's "Holberg Suite". A lot of Neo-Baroque and Neo-Romantic styles used here including a more modern treatment in the Finale which uses a Cuban dance pattern in the middle (just enough for me to subtitle it "Dance Cubano" - at least as "Cubano" as my music ever gets). At times the piece uses some very dense string writing with a lot of divisi throughout.
