The composition was commissioned by the teacher at Aarhus Katedralskole, Regnar Knudsen, on the occasion of the school's celebration of Morten Børup's 400th anniversary in 1926. Børup wrote the original Latin text 'In vernalis temporis'. According to a letter dated 16 May 1926, Carl Nielsen had finished and sent it to Regnar Knudsen.
