In 1928, a group of Polish musicologists, composers and musicicans founded Towarzystwo Wydawnicze Muzyki Polskiej (TWMP; Polish Music Publishing Society) in Warsaw. Prominent members included Adolf Chybiński, Teodor Zalewski, Tadeusz Ochlewski and Kazimierz Sikorski. TWMP published works by contemporary composers such as Felix Nowowiejski, Roman Palester, Henryk Melcer, Karol Szymanowski, Piotr Perkowski and Roman Statkowski.
Around the same time, a similar group consisting of Adolf Chybiński, Bronisław Rutkowski, Tadeusz Ochlewski and Teodor Zalewskia also founded Stowarzyszenie Miłośnikow Dawnej Muzyki Polskiej (Polish Early Music Association) in 1926. This association started the Wydawnictwo Dawnej Muzyki Polskiej (Polish Early Music Press) in 1928, which published 17 volumes in 10 years.
In 1934 the firm launched a periodical - Muzyka polska, a quarterly from 1934, then monthly 1937-39. This became the long-running monthly Ruch Muzyczny after the war (two-weekly 1945-2013, then monthly). The publishing companies became Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne in April 1945.
