The work was composed for a contest for a festival march to be premiered at the Seventh Jamboree of the Czechoslovak Skokol Community. The initial version (for piano duet) lacked the opening fanfares, but these were added by Suk well before the first performance (in the band arrangement by Oberthor) given in Letná Field. Suk prepared his setting for orchestra shortly after the initial work was completed. The chorus parts were added much later (see above). Additional details
