According to Grove Music, Denza was a singing professor at the Royal Academy of Music, and he "composed more than 500 songs, partsongs and cantatas to Italian, French and English texts."
- No need to explain; Denza is well known if only for Funiculì, Funiculà (and even better known to Richard Strauss fans for what happened when Strauss used that latter song in his Aus Italien, Op.16 without checking into little things like copyright status)...- ES (and in any case, this explanation goes on the CATEGORY PAGE, not on a work page.)
There is a remote possibility that this comes from a larger work, but recordings that give the original opera for other works on the disc give no larger work for this song, so it probably was composed as a single song.

Mentioned in a 6 October 1889 issue of the Gazzetta musicale di Milano (already with optional violin) (probably a review of a performance, as a publisher is not mentioned).
