The Universal Psalmodist. Containing, I. A Compleat Introduction to Psalmody; or, the Art of Singing Psalms, &c. Interspersed with many useful Scales and Examples, carefully laid down and explained, in a familiar Dialogue between Master and Scholar. II. A choice and valuable Collection of Psalm and Hymn Tunes, Canons and Anthems, many of which were never before published; also the Tunes, Anthems, &c. sung at the Magdalene, and Foundling Chapels, and other public Places in and about London, with Words adapted to each Tune. The Whole composed in a New and Easy Taste, For Two, Three, and Four, but generally for Four Voices, in the most familiar Keys and Cliffs, according to the Advice and Direction of the most eminent Masters in London. Calculated to promote and improve this most excellent Part of Social Worship, and thereby render it both useful and delightful in all Country Choirs, as well as in the Congregations and other Religious Societies in London and Westminster. HTI (Temperley): The only known copy of ed. 1 (scan uploaded above) lacks pp.149–52, but the index shows the contents to be identical to ed. 2. It may have first appeared in numbers. The Public Advertiser announced, 30 June 1760, ‘Number II of a new work, entitled PSALMODY MADE EASY; or, The Psalm-Singer’s Compleat Companion . . . by A. Williams,’ to appear in 17 numbers which would make 2 vols. in ‘royal octavo’; sold by J. Fuller and A. Williams: no other work of this description is known.
