Whiting's The Tale of the Viking was his submission for the competition at the 1880 Cincinnati Festival. It lost out to Dudley Buck's Scenes from Longfellow's Golden Legend.
The manuscript score and orchestra parts for the overture to The Tale of the Viking were among the music scores in Theodore Thomas' collection that are now held by the Rosenthal Archives of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
