Extra Information British composer Alice Mary Smith (1839-1884) wrote The Passions Overture in her early 40s, shortly before her death. It was performed four times during her lifetime yet like all of her other works for orchestra, it was never published. This edition is the first publication. Despite the many challenges faced by a female composer in Victorian era Great Britain, Smith’s compositions during this period of her life received a high level of praise from the British press. Despite this early praise, Smith never received the long-term recognition her talents deserved.
