My second piece titled The Passion is for 4 solo strings. It can be seen to be four-part harmony with extremely chromatic voice-leading and can be classified as Ultra-Romantic. It begins each phrase remotely removed from the key signature and gradually modulates to the Tonic key at the end of each. I think I wrote this as a High School Music Theory assignment, but I can't imagine that the teacher would have given even one of the voice parts to start us off, much less the harmony. He always gave us simple lines to add 4-part harmony to. But then I always produced finished works for him that went far beyond our assignments. The deep angst of the work represents Christ's passionate love for us "in that while we were yet sinners He died for us". It ends in C-Major, representing His Resurrection -- His victory over death. It has two halves, each with a 4-measure then 3-measure phrase. Each voice part in and of itself is too chromatic to be of much melodic interest, so it is hard to see the soprano or any voice representing a melody accompanied by the other voices.
