Program Notes - The waters of the mighty Tennessee River begin their journey to the sea high in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Sparkling mountain springs gradually come together, tumbling over rocky stream beds and clear falls to form the major tributaries of the Tennessee River. These colorfully named mountain tributaries include the Holston, French Broad, Little Tennessee, Hiwassee, Paint Rock, Duck, Ocoee (Toccoa), Clinch, Flint, Sequatchie, and Elk rivers.
Flowing south and west the Tennessee River has created in Alabama the second largest gorge in the United States (after the Grand Canyon). As the Tennessee River flows back north through Tennessee and nears Kentucky, it flows into the enormous 160,000-acre Kentucky Lake. A growing population of American Bald Eagles, living symbol of freedom, inhabit Kentucky Lake. Finally, the mighty Tennessee River flows into the Ohio just a few miles from the confluence of the Ohio and the Mississippi Rivers, truly in the very heart of America. This musical portrait concludes with power and majesty, befitting the mighty Tennessee River.
