Premiered in a concert with two other premieres- Duparc's Aux étoiles, and Turina's La procession del rocio.
In a letter he described the work as filled with his impressions of the war, labeling the first movement as "La mobilisation - La marne", the second movement as "La gaieté du front", the 3rd as "L'art latin et l'art boche", and the finale as inspired by "La victoire, avec l'hymne de S. Michel comme péroraison", but noted this was just for his friends. ("Vincent d'Indy et son temps", p.24.)
