Symphonies by Sergey Prokofiev

The score (as reprinted in 1929 by Hawkes) calls for an average duration of 25 minutes- which is nowhere near the average of the few existing recordings, suggesting that cuts were employed or that the speed of both movements was on the whole faster in early performances than nowadays, or both. The 2nd movement in modern performances, by itself, is generally about 25 minutes, and the first movement about 10-12 or so... - Premiere was on 8 May 1925, very soon after the composer completed orchestrating the work (much too soon), according to David Nice ("Prokofiev: From Russia to the West, 1891-1935, Volume 1", p.211-12.) Also, as to the publication date, 1927 ca. seems more likely, as he describes himself as still correcting the proofs of his 2nd symphony in a letter to Myaskovsky dated 6/18/27 (see Selected Letters of Sergei Prokofiev, p.268.) - ES
