Navigation etc.

The Symphony No. 1 is neo-romantic, heroic and extravert. It is composed in the late romantic tradition, and is scored for large orchestra. It consists of four movements. The 1st one is a monumental allegro in sonata form, based on two themes (the 1st one majestic, the 2nd one more singing, leading to a rhythmical derivation); the development section starts around 3’50”, the recapitulation starts around 7’15”, a long coda brings a solemn conclusion. The 2nd one is a vigorous scherzo (in which the timpani play a major role) with a pastoral trio (with a major role for the horns). The 3rd movement is a moderate slow andante-adagio, in which 3 themes (an air, a fanfare and a choral) are exposited and developed, without recapitulation; after a climax with a dramatic horn call, a lighthearted inversion of the fanfare motif solves the tensions. The 4th one (or finale) is again an energetic allegro, and is in an extended rondo form, in which two contrasting themes (the 1st one powerful, the 2nd one very delicate and singing, with beautiful solos) are exposited and developed; a majestic coda concludes the symphony. Digital performance using Sibelius 6 and Kontakt Gold. Score moving videos on my YouTube-channel. Erratum in the score: 1st movement: only 2 bassoons are playing in bar 14 the C and E.
