The longest and most substantial of eight string quartets, the third is also the earliest quartet to survive in its entirety (the first two having been transformed and combined into a piece for string orchestra). Kallstenius later arranged the third string quartet for nonet (or dectet depending on if contrabass is employed) as well as the second movement separately for string orchestra.
