First performance report in The Times Thursday November 28 1895 page 6 Issue 34746 col C

It does not often fall to the lot of a young composer to have his most important and most successful work played with such wonderful spirit as Mr. Emil Kreuz’s new quartet in D minor, opus 42, was played last night by Mr. Gompertz and his colleagues- Mr. Inwards, the composer himself and Mr. Ould. From the first note to the last, Mr. Gompertz led in a manner that even he cannot ever have surpassed; and thoroughly well supported as he was, the performance was one of the highest merit. Mr. Kreuz’s name has been known among a select few for some years as that of a gifted composer, but hitherto he has brought forward no work of such exceptional attainment as well as promise as the above mentioned quartet, now heard for the first time. …it is a long time since a chamber composition of such pronounced ability as this has been produced in London.
