  • According to Grove Music, "His extant works, which date from the period 1737–74, divide into three types: plainchant manuscripts, printed books with hand-notated plainchant, and printed liturgical books without plainchant. The manuscripts, which substantially outnumber his other works, serve a wide range of functions and include antiphonals, graduals, vesperals, offices for the dead and books of diverse chants. The printed books with plainchant comprise a gradual, psalter and confraternity handbook; printed liturgical books without plainchant include two vesperals, one for general use and another for Holy Week."
  • Since the harmonization of this tune has been attributed to Novello in several places, the likelihood is that the tune is from one of Wade's plainchant manuscripts. Therefore, this has been tagged as plainchant.
  • From Temperley, Hymn Tune Index (this is HTI number 15152a): First published with a Latin text, ‘Tantum ergo’, in Missae novae (Amsterdam, 1751); it is found also in a slightly earlier English MS. copied by John Francis Wade, and may have been composed by Wade (information from Bennett Zon).
  • First published in English in William Gardiner's Sacred Melodies, 1815, set to 'Lord dismiss us with thy blessing'
