This selection of 60-odd preparatory A4 pages presents samples of the work in progress. Page 1 is the opening page of the score. In this and the following pages the circled numbers refer to the corresponding measures, which are continuations or interpolations. Occasionally a written remark is added for mnemonic reasons such as 'spontaneous strain' (= 'A Simple Ditty'), in the form of a tentative improvisation, or 'distract from' or 'distracted', meaning a displaced or to be displaced passage. The bottom part of the last three pages, display a test piece for a different composition, which may end up as an opening for the next sonata (Sonata 7 : 7th ? 7 sq 1 & 2).
